May 2nd, 2017 we met with Academic Department Heads and President of the University, Dr Alfredo Espada; well respected cardio-thoracic surgeon for his surgical career and for his service to Guatemala as Vice President for President Colom. Included in the meeting was Dr Lisbeth Santizo, head of post graduate medical education, Dr Ortiz head of Research.
Dr Sam gave a presentation about OSSA’s generous support of the University Mariano Galvez orthopedic residency curriculum. She discussed OSSA’s purchase and donation of the 1st
arthroscopy tower in San Marcos hospital, implementation of the AAOS Orthopedic modules to enable practice of this new skill, development of a simulation lab, and sponsorship of residents to the AO Trauma Basic Fracture Courses & orthopedic AAOS conferences and experiences in the US. She also promoted our expanded international connections and relationships with other residency programs and fellowship sites developing in the US, Latin America with interest from US Universities for partnership residency exchanges. Dr Meono explained our ideas about updating equipment and procedures.
University Mariano Galvez supports San Marcos as their 1st and currently only orthopedic residency. We discussed how together we are making this a premier orthopedic residency for Guatemala and a model program.
We had a tour of their impressive and modern facilities, new research center, and state of the art genetic research facility. We hope to encourage collaborations with US research institutions & the incredible opportunities at University Mariano Galvez brand new research facility.
